Edric and Sylvaine

Edric and Sylvaine
by Brian Hooker
Illustrated by Howard Pyle
It befell, among those days, that Edric fared in the early autumn, before the fall of the leaves, along through a great forest of Brittany. His way led many days’ journey from any dwelling-place of men, in a land where no path was; moreover, the forests of Brittany are most of all others full of Trolls, Wolf-women, Elves, Faeries, and all manner of Soulless Ones, as well as many beasts…
Over the course of sixteen full-color pages bursting with rich language, Edric and Sylvaine tells the story of a wandering medieval singer and his doomed romance with one of the elfin Singing Women of the Woods.
Originally published in the August 1908 issue of Harper’s Monthly Magazine, this short fantasy story is now available as a charming standalone pamphlet handsomely adapted by Timothy Renner, an author, musician, and artist, as well as the host of the folklore podcast Strange Familiars.
Published by Dark Holler Arts (2026). The Peculiar Parish Bookshop is delighted to add this new chapbook edition of a classic story to our offerings. These copies are in new condition.
16-page pamphlet with full-color illustration by Howard Pyle throughout.
