by Was Ist Das?

Ballads of Seduction, Fertility, and Ritual Slaughter is a wonderfully consistent, decidedly spooky reimagining of The Wicker Man, one of the most revered folk-horror soundtracks of all time.”
—Gavin McNamara, KLOF Magazine

Glimpsed in a fever dream and realized in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of folk-horror granddaddy The Wicker Man, this new double-LP brings new life to the film’s haunting songs:

  • Burd Ellen, “The Highland Widow’s Lament”

  • Alvarius B, “Corn Rigs”

  • Andrew Liles, “The Landlord’s Daughter”

  • Good Shepherd feat. Maydo Kay, “Gently Johnny”

  • Magpahi, “May Pole”

  • Sophie Cooper, “Fire Leap”

  • The Owl Service & Harriet Bradshaw, “The Tinker of Rye”

  • United Bible Studies, “Procession/Chop Chop”

  • Meg Baird, “Willow’s Song”

  • Hawthonn, “Lullaby”

  • Teleplasmiste, “Festival/Mirie It Is”

  • Sharron Kraus, “Sing Cuckoo (Summer Is A-Coming In)”

  • David Colohan, “Loving Couples/The Ruined Church”

  • Burial Hex, “The Masks/Hobby Horse”

  • The Banshees of Bunworth, “Searching For Rowan”

  • Michael Begg, “Appointment with the Wicker Man”

  • Dean McPhee, “Sunset”

As is true of all good folk-horror, the tunes on Ballads of Seduction… are by turns cozy, unsettling, and bizarre. As on Summerisle, the atmosphere is thick as black pudding, with many of the songs giving way to hallucinatory soundscapes.

The Peculiar Parish Bookshop chanced to secure seven copies from the first pressing of this rare double-LP, only 200 made and sold-out elsewhere. They are available now, shipping from Berkeley.

Artwork and photography by Richard Wells, mastered by Andrew Liles, dreamed up by Ned Netherwood. Released by Was Ist Das? (WAS58: June 24, 2023) with proceeds from the record’s sales contributed to support the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

A new double-vinyl in perfect condition. Each purchase will be shipped with a digital download code for the full album.

"A fittingly weird fiftieth-anniversary tribute to The Wicker Man’s startling soundtrack. Magpahi’s synth-drizzled “Maypole,” Dean McPhee’s “Sunset” and Meg Baird’s “Willow’s Song” are particularly gorgeous.” —The Guardian

“Sgt Howie would never have approved.” —Terrascope
